Description
The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine seeks an accomplished and visionary veterinary medical oncologist for the Perlman Endowed Chair in Medical Oncology. This tenure-track faculty position will provide strategic leadership in advancing translational cancer research, clinical innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration at the intersection of animal, human, and environmental health.
The successful candidate will develop a nationally and/or internationally recognized research program that leverages the comparative oncology strengths of the College while contributing to the University's broader One Health and health sciences missions. The position includes opportunities to build collaborative programs across the Masonic Cancer Center, Medical School, School of Public Health, College of Biological Sciences, College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences, and external industry partners.
This endowed position is part of a non-traditional group hire designed to catalyze interdisciplinary research and serve as a catalyst for the continued growth of oncology at the CVM. While the position is rooted in medical oncology, the successful candidate will work across disciplinary boundaries, build and lead collaborative teams, and draw on diverse perspectives from related, complementary, and non-traditional fields to drive innovation in cancer research.
The successful candidate will demonstrate adaptability and resilience in an evolving extramural funding environment, with a strong record—or clear potential—for successful grantsmanship and the development of innovative research programs. The position is intended to attract extramural funding, develop new partnerships, and advance the College’s leadership in precision oncology and comparative cancer research. The successful candidate will also engage state, clinical, industry, and community partners to address high-impact research questions and translate discoveries into meaningful solutions.

Responsibilities
Research (50-60%)
Develop and sustain a high-impact, externally funded research program.
Establish collaborative programs across veterinary medicine, human medicine, public health and biological sciences.
Lead multidisciplinary teams addressing major challenges in cancer biology and treatment.
Pursue federal, foundation, and industry funding opportunities and assist in developing philanthropic resources to support oncology research and clinical trials.
Build research infrastructure that enables collaborative and team-based science.
Clinical Service (20-30%)
Provide specialty medical oncology services through the Veterinary Medical Center.
Promote innovative and evidence-based approaches to cancer care.
Contribute to clinical trials and translational research initiatives.
Teaching and Mentorship (15-25%)
Teach veterinary students, interns, residents, and graduate students.
Mentor trainees and early-career faculty.
Contribute to innovative educational programs and workforce development initiatives.

Salary Range
Associate Professor: $170,000 - $210,000
Full Professor: $180,000 - $210,000

Requirements
Required Qualifications
DVM, VMD, MD, PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree.
Eligibility for faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at the University of Minnesota.
Demonstrated record of scholarly productivity, including peer-reviewed publications.
Evidence of developing or participating in a sustained research program with the potential for or demonstrated success in securing extramural funding.
Established national or international reputation in comparative, translational, or clinical oncology.
History of successful extramural funding as principal investigator, co-principal investigator, and key personnel on competitive grants.
Demonstrated excellence in clinical oncology practice.
Commitment to teaching and mentoring professional, graduate, and/or postgraduate learners.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills.
Eligibility for veterinary licensure in Minnesota.
Preferred Qualifications
Board certification (or eligibility for certification) in Veterinary Medical Oncology (ACVIM-Oncology) or equivalent specialty.
Expertise in one or more strategic areas including:
o Comparative oncology
o Precision medicine
o Immuno-oncology
o Cancer genomics and multi-omics
o Data science, artificial intelligence, or computational oncology
o Clinical trials and translational therapeutics
o Cancer epidemiology and population health
Demonstrated success in leading multidisciplinary or multi-institutional research collaborations.
Experience building partnerships with industry, foundations, government agencies, or philanthropic organizations.
Evidence of mentoring successful graduate students, residents, postdoctoral trainees, or junior faculty.
Interest in developing center-level initiatives or shared research infrastructure.
Experience working within One Health, comparative medicine, or translational research environments.
