Key Responsibilities
• Command the Circuit: Operate, monitor, and manage cardiopulmonary bypass systems with surgical precision during open-heart and related procedures.
• Guardian of Perfusion: Ensure safe, stable perfusion and oxygenation-your vigilance keeps hearts beating and lives moving forward.

Job Summary
The Perfusionist operates extracorporeal circulation equipment to support or replace cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory function. Selects the right equipment and techniques for treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system. Monitors, examines, and treats physiologic conditions safely under a physician's order and supervision.
Essential Functions of the Role
• Monitors the altered circulatory process, initiates appropriate action when abnormalities arise, and keeps surgeon and other team members informed.
• Ensures the sterility and integrity of disposable equipment packaging. Ensures correct setup and breakdown of all equipment.
• Monitors cell saver and operates the heart-lung machine, blood gas examination machine, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and cardiac-help devices.
• Mixes and administers drugs and solutions for extracorporeal circulation. Follows industry best practices and established policies and procedures.
• Adjusts gas flow and mixtures. Administers anesthetic agents, blood, drugs, and fluids via the extracorporeal circuit. This consistently results in safe and effective procedures.
• Records relevant perfusion information during surgery; evaluates and maintains records after surgery.
• Performs quality control/preventive maintenance to ensure accuracy and longevity of equipment. Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.
Key Success Factors
• Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, chemistry and biology.
• Knowledge of several cardiac disease, defects and congenital anomalies.
• Knowledge of sterile and perfusion supplies: extracorporeal oxygenators, tubing circuits, and cannulae for adult, pediatric and infants.
• Knowledge of arteries, veins, organs, and specific blood flow paths in the body, including pressures and gas exchange in adult, pediatric, and infant patients.
• Knowledge of blood components, plasma composition of the human body and use of blood products by extracorporeal circuits and devices.
• Skill in operating extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment.
• Verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to follow orders, take directions, and deploy written perfusion protocols.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively during operation of extracorporeal help devices and providing patient care.
• Learn and apply regulatory and accreditation standards for operating room procedures and departmental policies.
• Ability to work and join in a flexible way in the delivery of patient care demonstrating a cohesive team approach.
• Ability to react calmly in stressful situations.
