Van Andel Institute (VAI) is an independent nonprofit biomedical research and science education organization
committed to improving the health and enhancing the lives of current and future generations. Established
by Jay and Betty Van Andel in 1996 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, VAI has grown into a premier research and
educational institution that supports the work of more than 360 scientists, educators, and staff.
Van Andel Research Institute (VARI), VAI’s research division, is dedicated to determining the epigenetic, genetic,
molecular and cellular origins of cancer, Parkinson’s and other diseases and translating those findings into
effective therapies. The Institute’s scientists work in onsite laboratories and participate in collaborative
partnerships that span the globe; collaborating with academia, industry, and philanthropy, the Institute orchestrates cutting-edge clinical trials to improve human health.
Company History
Jay and Betty Van Andel founded Van Andel Institute (VAI) in 1996. Together, they envisioned an institute that would have an impact world-wide in enriching and enhancing lives through biomedical research and education. Since its grand opening in 2000, VAI has supported Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) and Van Andel Education Institute (VAEI) in fulfilling and sustaining this vision. VARI has reflected this vision through remarkable strides in basic and translational research. This research has led to advances in cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, and the establishment of an excellent reputation among peer institutions. Through its work with students of all ages, VAEI has built a regional and national reputation as a source of well-reasoned, carefully documented and trustworthy insights regarding the ways in which we teach and learn science.

VARI Postdoctoral Fellows are full-time employees of the Institute and are eligible for VAI’s employee benefits. You will be eligible for the following benefits on your first day of employment:
