GENOMIC MEDICINE INSTITUTE
The Geisinger Genomic Medicine Institute (GMI) conducts innovative research in genetics, genomics and family history to enhance quality of life and improve healthcare value for our patients. Its mission is, “Partnering with patients, healthcare providers and researchers worldwide to enhance the quality of life through research, education and clinical care innovation in genomic medicine.” To fulfill the mission, the GMI is actively engaged with clinical care departments, clinical innovations, informatics and the broader research enterprise across the Geisinger system.
The Institute, founded in 2011, is under the direction of Dr. Marc S. Williams. The GMI has a multidisciplinary team including a medical geneticist, genetic physician assistant, genetic counselors and data managers and is in the process of adding dedicated informatics resources and increasing the modeling and economic analysis capacity through strategic partnerships with other Geisinger centers, including the comprehensive autism program.

Company History

Geisinger Health System was founded in 1915 by Abigail Geisinger and first directed by Harold Foss, a surgeon from the Mayo group. It now serves more than 2.6 million residents as a not-for-profit, fully integrated health service organization. The physician-led system includes successful clinical programs, a sophisticated informaton technology platform, an insurance provider, Geisinger Health Plan, and a strong commitment to research.

The robust research program is a catalyst for much of Geisinger's innovation and clinical change. Work is underway to expand Geisinger's genetics program and to develop the Autism and Developmental Medicine Institute. Part of the eMERGE network, Geisinger is investigating the link between genetic informaton and disease characteristics and symptoms.
