Department Overview
The laboratory of Brian Scottoline at the Pape Family Pediatric Research Institute, is locaed in the Department of Pediatrics. In conjunction with the adjacent and collaborating laboratory of Sarah Andres we investigate the roles of human milk beyond nutrition, specifically, the impacts of human milk on intestinal epithelial cell biology, and the mechanisms of those interactions. We are particularly interested in how human milk reduces the risk for the devastating neonatal intestinal inflammatory disease, necrotizing enterocolitis. We are at the forefront of human milk research, using rare patient digrsted milk samples and, patient-derived intestinal organoids to investigate these questions.
Function/Duties of PositionWe are looking for a dynamic, organized, self-starter with a PhD or Masters degree with experience to help us make new discoveries. A strong candidate with a BS degree in Biology or Chemsitry with extensive researchexperience may also be considered.
The Senior Research Associate is responsible for executing, and overseeing complex organoid experiments and developing functional assays to delineate mechanisms of human milk action on intestinal development and maturation. This involves generating neonatal patient-derived intestinal organoids (enteroids) from surgical tissue samples. Cultivating enteroids requires keen attention to detail and impecable sterile technique.
The Senior Research Associate is also responsible the handling and purification of milk samples for exploring the physiology of milk interactions with intestinal epithelium, and for running various downstream cellular and molecular analyses including, qPCR, western blotting, immunostaining, advanced imaging, proteomics, and transcriptomics.
The position also requires the ability to develop new or optimize existing bioassays. The ability to manage multiple co-occuring experiments is essential. In addition to primary project responsibilitoes, this position may assist lab team members with experiments involving neonatal mouse models of the neonatal intestinal inflammatory disease necrotizing enterocolitis, and support for collaborating labs with visting members.
