Lynker is seeking a part-time Program Assistant to assist in the day-to-day operations and education programs at the Sanctuary Exploration Center at the Monterey Bay National Sanctuary. It involves working with members of the general public, volunteers, and K-12th grade students. This is a part-time seasonal position from January 2026-May 31st 2026, an average of 16 hours per week Wed-Sunday, preferably including Fridays.
Responsibilities
The Program Assistant will work with the Sanctuary Exploration Center team to:
Assist in the daily operations at the Center:
- Open and close the center
- Troubleshoot computer equipment associated with the exhibits
- Welcome visitors during open hours and answer questions about the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary
Assist in the delivery of the Center's volunteer docent program:
- Greet volunteers and deliver updates at the start of their shifts
- Work with volunteers on the exhibit floor
- Support delivery of docent enrichments and field trips
Support delivery of K-12th grade field trips:
- Greet school groups and lead small group (10-15 students) explorations in the exhibit hall
- Support the Center's Education Specialists in delivery outdoor programming on the beach and Santa Cruz Wharf
Assist in outreach and community events:
- Represent the sanctuary at occasional offsite tabling events
- Support facilitation of onsite interpretive programming
Qualifications
Requirements:
- At least two years college experience or a proven equivalent experience in science, environmental science or environmental education (or combination)
- General knowledge or training in marine biology, oceanography, or environmental science.
- An enthusiasm for connecting both public and K-12 audiences with marine science and conservation
- Ability to take direction and demonstrate decision making skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Availability to work at least one weekend day regularly (Friday and Saturday or Sunday) and occasional evenings
- Confidence using Google and Microsoft applications such as gmail, calendar, and excel
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a visitor center or museum setting
- Experience leading public or K-12th grade educational programming
