Department Overview
With decades of academic laboratory experience in pathology and genetics, the Knight Diagnostic Laboratories deliver advanced diagnostic testing to make personalized medicine a reality. Specializing in oncology, rare genetic disorders, and infectious disease, the laboratories are CLIA certified and CAP accredited. Our Medical Directors and seasoned technical staff have many years of experience in clinical testing and test development and are dedicated to providing the best quality service for physicians and their patients. Through our close partnership with the Knight BioLibrary and Histopathology Shared Resource Laboratories, research investigators can gain access to human biological specimens, histology, and immunohistochemistry services. Function/Duties of Position
The purpose of this position is to perform various aspects of patient sample preparations, and to support the cytogenetics technologists with their highly complex genetic testing. This position supports the mission and objectives of the laboratory, OHSU, and the Knight Cancer Institute. The duties require initiative and independent decision-making, and appropriate communication and discussion of procedures and results with fellow workers, supervisors, and directors. Laboratory Procedures and Responsibilties:
- Prepare culture media and solutions;
- Set up, maintain, and harvest tissue cultures;
- Prepare cells for chromosome or molecular cytogenetic analysis by both routine and special means;
- Make slide preparations;
- Prepare and operate automated slide scanning platform;
- Cuts and organize cell spreads into karyograms using Applied Spectral Imaging software;
- Prepare tissue slides for analysis using DNA hybridization techniques;
- Stain chromosome preparations using both routine and special techniques;
- Enter data into laboratory information system;
- Prepare summary of procedures and findings;
- Keep appropriate records;
- Make and answer telephone calls related to obtaining specimens and patient information needed for sample processing and preparing reports.
Required Qualifications
Education and experience:
- Completion of a 2 year accredited program in Medical Laboratory Technician training plus MLT (ASCP) within 90 days of hire or AMT certification within 90 days of hire. Depending on date of training, different continuing education requirements will apply. ORBachelor's degree in a chemical or biological science and two years of Laboratory Technical Assistant training/experience performing standardized laboratory tests in the specialty area(s) in which high complexity testing will be performed; MLT (ASCP) or AMT certification preferred. Depending on date of training, different continuing education requirements will apply.
- Ability to complete time sensitive tasks according to protocols, and prioritize multiple tasks at one time
- Excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills: both written and verbal
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems
- Proficiency with computers running Windows and PC applications e.g. MS Excel, Oracle, Access, Word and Powerpoint.
- Excellent customer service skills, both on the phone and in person
- Energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree with courses in genetics, cytogenetics, and/or molecular biology
- Work experience in a clinical cytogenetics laboratory
- ASCP certification in clinical cytogenetic technology
