The University of Pittsburgh's Renal-Electrolyte Division is seeking a Laboratory Manager to manage day-to-day laboratory operations and ensure laboratory best practices within an NIH (National Institutes of Health)- and DOD (Department of Defense)- and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)- funded laboratory in the Department of Medicine's Renal-Electrolyte Division. Our laboratory employs exciting cutting-edge methods from a variety of disciplines, including molecular biology, cellular biology, and animal physiology and pathology to investigate molecular pathways leading to progressive kidney injury. The applicant must have experience working with rodents. This position will be a leadership position within the laboratory, with training/teaching/supervision and direction of other technician staff and student members including undergraduate and graduate students. Most of the work is expected to be done autonomously, with encouragement to seek advice and guidance when needed.

Job Summary
Acts as operational laboratory manager to oversee general day-to-day operations and ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and protocols. Evaluates new products, negotiates vendor prices, and instructs staff and researchers in quality control and proper procedures.
Essential Functions
- Manages daily laboratory operations, including conducting and overseeing quality assurance and best practices. Including (but not limited to) compliance with relevant environmental health and safety policy and policies of the Division of Laboratory and Animal Resources (DLAR).
- Tasks include development and modification of IACUC, IBC protocols. Actions carried out in this position will have a significant impact on the safety, validity, and integrity of research being done in the lab.
- Collaborates with others in the laboratory, within the Renal Division, University, and other institutions to develop projects and procedures.
- Maintains, troubleshoots, and adapts scientific equipment and techniques for experimental needs of the laboratory.
- Prepares budget requests, purchasing and manages approved budget.
- Techniques include western blotting, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence, ELISA, RNA isolation and quantitative real-time PCR, tissue histology, mouse surgery and handling, acquisition of kidney tissue and urine / serum collection from mice, maintenance of transgenic mouse colonies. Must be able to follow protocols and maintain organized inventory and accurate laboratory notebook. Must be able to adapt experimental approaches based on weekly discussions with primary investigator and others.
- Data Analysis includes being able to learn computer programs to analyze data such as Excel, Graphpad Prism, BioRad imaging software, Image.
- Must organize data and present data to the laboratory using powerpoint.
- Laboratory Maintenance includes preparing commonly used buffers, maintenance of cell lines, inventory and ordering, documentation of lab protocols, animal ordering and handling.
